Applied Innovation: The Value of Showing, not telling

The Hunter is on the crest of a transition that will reshape the way that we live, interact and do business.

Right now, we have the perfect opportunity to build on the region’s natural competitive advantages, exploit its depth of research talent and leverage these ingredients to shape our region into one that can be renowned for its innovation excellence.

With weekly Radio shows in Australia and in the UK on the BBC, regular television appearances, and 45 published books, Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki is the man with the answers when it comes to Science and Technology. Dr. Karl will discuss the highlights and pitfalls of a career spent explaining science. He hones in on the value of demonstrating applied innovation as the key tool in convincing people of what’s possible, and why right now this is more important than ever.

A panel of local innovators will join Dr. Karl to explore why it’s important to demonstrate applied innovation across a broad spectrum of fields, the barriers to participating in innovation for many, and why they’ve chosen Newcastle to base their innovation practice.

Dining in Newcastle

There are a few eat streets around the city worth checking out. Due to a big uptick in visitors since COVID, you’ll want to book restaurants for Friday and Saturday nights no later than next week. Here’s a few recommendations in different parts of the city:

City Centre (East)

If you’re coming along to welcome drinks on Friday night, something in the eastern end of the CBD would be handy for dinner. All of these are in walking distance:

City Centre (West)

If you’re staying at Quest, here are a few options closer to your accommodation worth booking in at. You can jump on a tram at Crown Street and get off at Honeysuckle or Newcastle Interchange:

Cooks Hill (Darby Street)

Darby Street is Newcastle’s ‘eat street’. You’ll find pretty much every cuisine here and a few late-night options. With too many to list, you’re best to check out Hunter Hunter for a rundown of local restaurants.

As a starting point, you might want to look at Coal River & Co , MEET, and Goldbergs.

Sweet Tooth?

Newcastle has some awesome little gelato shops!

  • Popolo offers authentic Italian gelato made by hand and so good you can taste the love!
  • G an G Gelato is a family run business with delicious ice cream.
  • Kiwi Ice-cream is nice and close to Newcastle beach so you can finish your Ice-cream on the sand.
